In the early 90’s my wife Heather Sue Chase had dabbled in producing local theater in South Florida; with an emphasis on Jewish themes. After several lackluster shows, a Australian show seeking to make it in the USA came to our attention, The show was making noise in Europe and needed investors to open in New York. Sue bought in. STOMP opened in 1994 at the Orpheum Theatre, and believe it or not, is still running today. 20+ years of sold out performances!
It was so successful, 4 touring companies were formed traveling the world. This tiny show, with no dialog, no story-line, no music, no lyrics, no stars, has returned to the investors 1,700 percent profits!
With those profits Sue and I invested in many Broadway productions. Together we hit the lottery again with JERSEY BOYS buying into this show when it was just a dinner-theater production in Lajoya, California. Now there are several touring companies serving as revenue streams for more productions.
There were plenty of flops, make no mistake; our biggest was ROCKY, THE MUSICAL which lasted only 6 months and cost $16 Million to mount.
But the winners more than compensated. Heather Sue Chase became a major player/producer of B’way shows with 3 shows on Broadway this (2016) season: BEAUTIFUL, The Carol King Musical, JERSEY BOYS, and ON YOUR FEET, Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s story.
And STOMP continues its run Off-Broadway, with several touring companies as well.
